Across our Coffee Table this time, we have the newly-appointed General Manager of Eskom's Free State Operating Unit, Lindi Mthombeni.
Clearly a people's person, we asked the questions and let her do the rest.
To get the background into proper perspective, where were you born, bred and educated?
I was born and bred in Kwazulu-Natal.
I matriculated at Kwandlangezwe High School in Northern KZN and later became a proud Alumunis of the University of Fort Hare as well as Michigan State University. My academic background is in the environmental sciences, with B.Sc in Biochemistry and a Master's degree in Business Administration. I also spent some time on a Master's degree in Environmental Management.
Career in a nutshell?
I started working with Eskom in 1996 and haven't looked back! The electricity environment has fascinated me from the beginning. My first job in the company was in the Technical Audit environment with focus on Water Management. My interest grew wider and eventually I was heading the department.
Since when in your current position as GM – and how do you find living in Bloem?
I was appointed in this position as from 1 October 2011. After living in Gauteng for many years, I enjoy the change of scenery. You have probably heard it many times before, but the people in the Free State are really exceptional. I look forward to many happy years in Bloemfontein!
What, briefly, is your vision as GM Eskom Free State Operating Unit?
My vision is to see the Unit taking the lead to support the organisation's drive to becoming one of the top five power utilities in the world. I also want to see us making strides in terms of supporting economic growth in the Free State province.
Interests outside the office?
I enjoy traveling, reading and spending time with my loved ones.
From a young age, I have enjoyed reading. My father instilled a love for reading in me and I have never lost that interest since. My children share this love with me and you will always see a book in my daughter's handbag. She is a medical doctor, but her dream is to one day open her own bookstore.
I am a big fan of EG White's works, especially The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages. Above all, my favourite book and the handbook for my life, is the Bible.
Family-wise?
I am a passionate family woman. In 2011 my best friend and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. My husband is extremely supportive of me and encourages me to reach my goals.
I have three adult children and a beautiful five year old granddaughter, also named Lindi.
Favourite food?
I live a healthy life and enjoy food straight out of nature, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. I especially love avocados.
Music taste?
Gospel music - with favourite artists Sandy Patty, BeBe & CeCe Winans, The Heritage Singers and Beyond Vocal.
Films / TV best liked?
I enjoy films about marriage seeing that my own is such an important part of my life. I love both Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too and also found much inspiration from Fireproof.
I like reality cooking shows, such as Cake Boss and The Food Network Challenge.
Philosophy in life?
I believe that it is important to live a balanced life. When you are at work, focus all your attention and energy on the task at hand. When you are at home, devote your time to your family and other loved ones.
I also believe that economic development is important, without losing sight of the environment.
Remark in closing?
Success is a team effort – everyone has a role to play and should bring their skills and talents to the table.
