Goldfields gets tollgate

Although the N1 was not re-routed via the Goldfields, the National Roads Agency (NRA) has decided, as a compromise, to upgrade the existing R30 road between Kroonstad and Bloemfontein, via the Goldfields, to national status with a toll plaza between Brandfort and Bloemfontein.
Although the number of lanes of the road has not been finally decided yet, all other major road networks in and around the Goldfields are four-lane. Also the Kroonstad- Welkom- Bloemfontein route is 10 km shorter than the Kroonstad- Winburg- Bloemfontein route. The toll fees will probably be lower on the Goldfields road, making it more attractive for trucks. The proposed site for the tollgate is between Brandfort and Bloemfontein with two options identified. The final site will be determined by the environmental impact study, which has been approved and is now available for public perusal at various venues in the region.
The R30 forms part of an important arterial route providing a regional link between Kroonstad, the Goldfields area and Bloemfontein and is an alternative route to the existing N1 between Gauteng and the Cape. The draft scooping report is available for viewing at the public library in Theunissen, Masilo, Brandfort, Masilonyana Municipal Offices, Motheo Municipal Offices, Fichardt Park Public Library, Virginia Public Library, the Ingrid Setlhare Public Library in Brandfort, the Welkom Public Library, Thabong 2 Public Library, Kroonstad Public Library and Moqhaka Municipal Offices.
