It has been announced that South Africa and Lesotho have pledged to upgrade the Sani Pass road linking the two countries to the amount of R160 million. South Africa's and Lesotho's Transport Ministers as well as Free State MEC Neo Masithela last week launched the upgrading project at Underberg, near Pietermaritzburg.
The 33.1 km road is currently gravel and is mainly being used by 4X4 vehicles as it is difficult for cars to navigate the terrain. It is set to be upgraded into a smooth, tarred surface that is accessible to normal cars and public transport vehicles.
The upgrading of the road is expected to bring much-needed development to the areas of Himvelle and Underberg in South Africa as well as Mokhotlong in Lesotho. The project would contribute to BEE through the linking of an established and emerging consultant via a joint venture agreement.
