As reported in this edition of the Free State Business Bulletin, complaints by the public about widespread littering in Free State cities and towns are flowing thick and fast. We have also provided a glimpse through our camera lens.
The image this is portraying, also to prospective, much-needed investors from outside, is very negative and does not spell good for development in general.
Therefore we say that, apart from all the other much lauded requirements for Nepad, charity begins at home, meaning cleanliness at home is the first step towards successful development.
If we can't keep our home turf clean, how can we (Africa) be expected to run our economies efficiently and be entrusted with foreign investor money?
Again : How can we be expected to be ready for e.g. the 2010 World Cup if our towns, cities, streets, roads and parks are not clean and attractive?
Last thought : Remedial action should definitely start with a pro-active public information campaign, especially at schools level, enlightening our people not to litter and to be conscious of a clean environment. Then the cleaning-up part would be a piece of pie.
The opening of the new casino in Bloemfontein has put the spotlight again on this concept and the gambling industry. Although latest figures show that this industry is burgeoning and that it does create some job opportunities, there is also hard evidence that gambling at casino's is absorbing a lot of money which would have otherwise gone for highly beneficial escalating development and even putting food in people's mouths and providing for their daily needs. Therefore from a practical economic view we cannot support the concept of casino's and gambling.
Besides, in Biblical terms gambling is wrong.
