Verlsag oor Vrystaatse ekonomie
'n Aspek wat nie juis aangeraak is nie in die verslag van die Sentrum vir Ontwikkeling en Onderneming soos op die voorblad berig, is swart ekonomiese bemagtiging (SEB) - hetsy die positiewe en negatiewe implikasies daarvan. Veral die kwessie geopper van gebrek aan effektiewe kommunikasie tussen die openbare en private sektore is akuut in die Vrystaat en wat vervolgens willens en wetens daarmee verband hou, is die wyse waarop SEB toegepas word, nie net in die Vrystaat nie, maar natuurlik in die hele land. Terwyl dit 'n kontensieuse saak is met talle gesigspunte, is die huidige toepassingsvorme daarvan besig om blankes op grond van rassediskriminasie tweedeklas burgers te maak, veral in die ekonomie. Die netto resultaat is kennelik dat bv. in die Vrystaat 'n dualistiese ekonomie, oftewel twee ekonomieë, besig is om te ontwikkel - een ekonomiese deel wat hoofsaaklik om die publieke sektor en verkryging van dienste en produkte sentreer en 'n ander deel wat hoofsaaklik binne oorwegend blanke besigheidsgeledere funksioneer. Hoewel daar natuurlik die geïntegreerde deel ook is, is hierdie waarneembare dualistiese aard van die ekonomie duidelik teenproduktief en skadelik. Dus 'n onderwerp wat beslis aandag vir die toekoms verg en een waaroor daar verseker nog baie gepraat sal word.

Shame on you, Mangaung city fathers
While of course nobody is guilty until convicted by a court of law, the mere fact that the country's foremost law enforcing unit had to swoop on the first couple of Mangaung municipal area and his chief executive officers, accusing them as ringleaders of fraudulent activities amounting to some R150 million and having them in foot-shackles in court, has brought unprecedented scandal. These “city fathers” have been entrusted with the finances and management of the capital of the Free State and yet their activities were such that charges of this nature are being levelled against them. What about the residents looking to them for leadership towards a better life, of the hundreds of thousands around them living in abject poverty and of the scores of people streaming daily to the tax hall in the Bram Fischer Building to pay their dues? Shame on you, “city fathers” of Mangaung!
