• Preller Walk Sentrum, Bloemfontein: Jo-Ann Trust Ontwikkelaars het aangekondig dat die ontwikkeling van die Preller Walk Winkel- en kantoorsentrum langs Preller Plein Sentrum, Dan Pienaar, Bloemfontein, voortgaan teen 'n koste van R50 miljoen - R60 miljoen, met aanvangsdatum September 2004. Daarmee sal die oorblywende 7 450m² grond by die bestaande Sentrum van 11 700m² toegebou word. Op openbare vergaderings wat oor die beoogde ontwikkeling gehou is, is egter gesê die aansoek om ontwikkeling het nie die korrekte voorgeskrewe proses deur die Munisipaliteit gevolg nie, terwyl soneringsvereistes vir oop ruimtes geïgnoreer word.
• SMME's in Free State: According to the website of the Bloemfontein Chamber of Trade & Industry, at www.bcci.co.za, the number of SMME's in the Free State more than doubled from 1994 to 2004 from 318 to 845 enterprises. This resulted in some 7 900 new job opportunities, with SMME's currently supplying work to about 18 100 persons in the province.
• Munisipale belasting in Matjhabeng verminder: Goeie nuus vir myne en eienaars van landbougrond binne die Matjhabeng munisipale gebied is dat grondbelasting op vanjaar se begroting met die helfte verminder is. Sedert 1999 betaal grondeienaars 8,8 sent in die rand belasting, maar vanjaar is dit vasgestel op slegs 4,448 sent. Die belasting word net gehef op landbougrond wat sedert 1994 met die afbakening van Matjhabeng binne munisipale grense val en is hoofsaaklik grond wat aan myne behoort. Die nuwe waardasierol behoort teen die einde van die jaar afgehandel te wees en dan sal die belasting van kommersiële plaasgrond aandag kry.
• Bloemfontein Airport upgrading: It is reported that the Bloemfontein Airport is to be extensively upgraded to the tune of R10 million, with work commencing April 2005. This follows upgrading of some R15 million the past two years and would enable the airport to significantly increase its current passenger handling capacity of some 20 000 passengers per month.
• Toerismeroete vir Suid-VS: Na berig word is planne vir 'n toerismeroete deur die Suid-Vrystaat in 'n gevorderde stadium, met Open Africa wat hulp verleen en Engen wat finansiering verskaf. Daar word veral gekyk na die dorpe Fauresmith, Jagersfontein, Jacobsdal, Philippolis en Koffiefontein. Navrae Jill Vermaak (051) 724 0259.
• Groot oes vir Bethlehem appelprojek : Die appelprojek vir kleinboere ±8 km buite Bethlehem op die Fouriesburg-pad, gaan vanjaar na verwagting 'n oes ter waarde van R9,3 miljoen lewer. Op die plaas, wat bestaan uit 110 boorde van 1 ha elk, het vanjaar 500 ton appels geproduseer met 'n geprojekteerde verdienste van R9,3 miljoen. Die projek met altesaam 94 kleinboere, waarvan 29 vroue is, word gefinansier deur die NOK en die Ontwikkelingsbank van Suider-Afrika en word bestuur deur die landboumaatskappy Afgri in vennootskap met die kleinboere. Appels word verskaf aan o.m. Woolworths, Spar en Pick 'n Pay, terwyl uitgevoer word na o.m. Marks & Spencer in Brittanje. Die plaas het Eurogap-akkreditasie, wat beteken dit voldoen aan die streng gehaltestandaarde vereis deur Europese winkels. Meer besonderhede by (058) 303 5804.
• Casino for Bloemfontein : The planned Mangaung Sun has been awarded a Free State casino license, which is to result in R220 million invested in a new casino and family leisure complex on the south-eastern side of Bloemfontein. The new complex will consist of a casino with 10 tables and 230 slot machines, a Sun International-managed 80-bed-hotel, a 150-seat conference centre, sports bar, a 120-seat buffet restaurant, two fast food outlets and a children's games area with a créche. Sun International has a 70% stake in the Mangaung Sun, while its empowerment partners include the Thabo Community Trust and Estapele Investments. The development is expected to create during the construction phase 560 direct and 700 indirect jobs.
• OVK neem KOLK oor : Oos-Vrystaat Kaap Beherend (OVK), die voormalige koöperasie met hoofkantoor te Ladybrand en omskep in 'n maatskappy, met verspreide takke vir die Vrystaat en Oos-Kaap, is 'n gevorderde proses om Karoo Oranje Landboukoöperasie (KOLK), met hoofkantoor te Hopetown en enkele takke in die Noord-Kaap, oor te neem. Die oorname behoort wetmatiglik vandeesmaand voltrek te word.
• Bethlehem middedorp opgeknap : Opgradering van The Royal Terrace in Pres. Boshoffstraat, Bethlehem (voorheen die Royal Hotel) in 'n luukse verblyf- en konferensiefasiliteit is goed op dreef en vorm die speerpunt om die geskiedkundige middedorp na sy eertydse glorie te herstel. Die projekbedrag beloop bykans R10 miljoen, met die voltooiingsdatum Februarie 2005. Daar word gehoop dat dit gevolg sal word deur verdere opknappings en ontwikkelings ter herrysenis van die eens karaktervolle middedorp.
• Multi-billion rand African theme park for East Rand: A feasibility study is at present being conducted for the creation of a world-class African-themed amusement park near Johannesburg International Airport. Africa 'The Park' is a proposed 630-ha development of R2,5 billion - R3 billion to be located between Kempton Park and Pretoria. The development would comprise four aspects, viz. the Africa theme park, SpacePort Africa, a Sesame Street water park and a golf estate. The projected number of visitors are 3 million to 3,5 million people a year, of which 10% will be expected to come from abroad, 20% from African countries and the 70% bulk from South Africa.
• SA top women to be published: A book containing profiles of 2 000 top women in business and government in South Africa is to be published soon, in conjunction with the DTI and other national corporates. Criteria for inclusion include inter alia percentage of female staff, percentage of female directors and policies that empowers women within the company. In conjunction with the publication, a Top Women in Business and Government Gala Awards Dinner is to be hosted on 10 August 2004, followed by a two-day Top Women Conference 11-12 August 2004 - all at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. • Arts & crafts industry in SA: According to indications, South Africa's crafts industry is fast establishing itself as a lucrative business sector, with total earnings of up to R3,5 billion per annum contributed through roadside sales and more formal craft-center trading. Providing previously under-resourced groups with an entry point into the formal economy, the arts & crafts industry is regarded as a valuable source of job creation and income for the 1,2 million people it employs.
